Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Bishops, priests and deacons are the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion.  When these ordinary ministers are not available, commissioned extraordinary ministers of
Holy Communion may assist with the distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful.

Diocese of Saint Augustine Norms and Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are to be fully initiated Catholics, i.e., received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, and be at least 16 years of age. They should regularly attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. As well, they are to be encouraged to frequently participate in the sacraments.

Formation and training: At least 3 hours of training for all extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion in the theology of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  Additional training of at least 2 hours is necessary to provide these same ministers with the practical aspects of their ministry at Mass.  Ministers are commissioned upon completion of training.

Continuing, ongoing formation: At least two hours of continuing formation every two years.

Special Ministers of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound

Ministers are needed to bring Holy Communion to parish members unable to get to mass and to provide ministry to the patients in the two Nursing Facilities (Heartland Healthcare and West Jacksonville Rehabilitation Center) within the parish.

Ministers are scheduled to visit the sick and homebound on Sunday mornings following the 8:00 a.m. mass or other times as meets the needs of those being cared for.

Requirements: In order to be a Special Minister of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound, you must have received all the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) and regularly attend Mass at Most Holy Redeemer Church. Those interested must also complete a volunteer application for work, be fingerprinted and attend the Protecting God’s Children Program.
